Pregnant Mare Rescue Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 2 Mar/Apr 2007 |
| Spring is Here! | As the weather begins to warm the green hills lush and heavy with grass, I feel that I am truly blessed. My volunteers are extraordinary, my neighbors generous, the professional people that donate their services are great. And the folks I do business with, try and give me discounts whenever possible. I feel it is a tribute to the human spirit! My little rescue is growing by leaps and bounds. Mares foal in the spring, beginning in April and continue right thru August. We are excited as the opportunity to save more lives becomes very real. We could not, and cannot do this work with out your support. Your donations make it all happen. We appreciate every dollar. $2.50 feeds a horse all day. Another $3.00 keeps her free of worms for 8 weeks. Every little bit helps as we get these moms out of harms way and into safe, loving homes. So as the flowers blooms and the babies begin to arrive, I wish you a very special and happy spring!

Lynn Hummer, founder of Pregnant Mare Rescue, has given her life and soul to save pregnant mares and their foals from slaughter and abusive situations. She obtained her real estate license so that ALL her commissions will go towards saving pregnant mares and their foals. The volunteers and the horses at Pregnant Mare Rescue would like to thank Lynn for her gallantry and unselfishness for the majestic horse world.

| IN THIS ISSUE: | | IN THE NOSE/News: | | | Generous Neighbors | If it were not for the generous neighbors, John and Moonset, next door to Pregnant Mare Rescue we could not have saved Dazzle and her baby Lil 'Dozer due for slaughter on October 31st. Now another generous neighbor has donated their pasture to Pregnant Mare Rescue; we are so thankful to you Bill, Jana & David; we can now work on saving more Pregnant Mares - Yeah!
All three horse slaughter plants in the U.S. have been shut down; this is a huge accomplishment and we congratulate all that put in their unselfish efforts for our cherished horses. However, the reality that our horses will be shipped over the borders of Canada and Mexico are very real and there is a chance that the closures could be temporary.
The pregnant mares that were awaiting slaughter will now need homes before they end up in abusive situations or shipped over the borders of Canada and Mexico. Therefore, in the following months Pregnant Mare Rescue will be scrambling to achieve at least two more pregnant mares - donations will now be more important than ever! Read the following press release from The Society for Animal Protective Legislation for more information or visit their website at: www.saplonline.org/horses.htm. COURT DECLARES HORSE SLAUGHTER TO BE ILLEGAL
Washington, D.C. (March 28, 2007) - In a 51-page opinion issued just hours ago, United States District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly held that the slaughter of horses in America violates federal law. In her opinion, issued in response to a lawsuit filed in February 2006 by the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL) and other humane organizations and individuals, Judge Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) violated the National Environmental Policy Act by failing to conduct an environmental impact review of its decision to allow the continuation of horse slaughter. More on this... | | Adoption Opportunities | We currently do not have any adoption opportunities here at our ranch in Aptos California. We expect to have adoption opportunities available from our ranch at Pregnant Mare Rescue sometime after this coming spring in 2007. However, we ask that you please look at adoption opportunities from our good friends at Nor Cal Equine Rescue. NorCal Equine Rescue is located in Northern California with many adoptable horses and other animals ready for good homes right now. NorCal has been a big inspiration to us and we greatly appreciate their help! |

| Horse Talk from the Pasture: | | | Hi, my name is Lil' Dozer (Dazzle's baby, the one on the right). | Lil' Dozor's Story Hi my name is Lil' Dozer. Th'story is told that I am named after a Bulldozer; I'm meant to grow-up BIG! Quite often I hear "Wow, look how big she's getting! My mom and I traveled a long-long way by trailer that seemed to take days. Before we traveled we were in a corral that the humans called "the feedlot". This place was very scary. The human voices were load and yelling. The corral was very crowded with panicked running horses. Everywhere I turned I saw that scared look. Even my mom was worried. I got knocked down and someone stepped on me and broke my ear. I then lost my mom for a long time and then I panicked and began running around too. Finally she found me and kissed my broken ear. I was so happy to see my mom that by the time we were loaded up on the trailer I was so grateful to have my mom back that I hardly noticed my throbbing ear.
I showed up at my new home very sick but the nice humans took care of me. >>>>>> |
| I now feel safe and content, although if my mom gets very far away I get frightened because I don't want to lose her again. I often make the humans laugh with my antics. They especially like the way I drink water with my two front feet in the water trough, but then the humans act a tad-bit disgruntled when they have to clean the trough every single day and sometimes twice a day. And there isn't a project that goes by in the pasture without my supervision and input, "oh, how I love to help". I have two new friends: Roxy and Wilma. Roxy is another filly quite a bit smaller than myself; we run and run and have a good ole' time. Wilma is what the humans call a goat. She thinks she's a dog. Yep, she came right out and told me she was a dog. Said she can walk on a leash and everything. I like to eat my hay while lying down and Wilma stands on top of me while I eat! Ever see a dog do that? Nope, she's a goat. But I don't want to hurt her little feelings, so I'll just let it be. One of my all-time favorite things is to be groomed; I could stand and let the humans groom me all day and I especially like is when they tell me how beautiful I am. I'm happy to be at my new home with the nice humans, the rest of horses, Wilma the goat and of course my mom. My mom says I should be sure and thank everyone who helped pay to get us here. I am truly grateful.
So thank you! Signed Lil' Dozer
