From PMR:  "Prodding" involves the use of electric cattle prods on Rodeo horses to get them to "perform".  Horses have very thin skin (just watch how they "twitch" when a fly lands on them), and prodding is extremely cruel, inhumane, and unnecessary.

Can you please consider forwarding this request to friends and family (and all who are concerned about the treatment of horses in rodeos)?

I’ve attached a copy of a letter I sent today (letters can be sent for those who cannot attend the public hearing). Feel free to borrow the text used in this letter, and be sure to address letters to all five of the supervisors who will be involved in the decision making process:

Dear Supervisors McHugh, Gage, Alvarado, Yeager and Kniss,

Regarding the upcoming October 9 Santa Clara hearing of the proposal for of a county ordinance relating to the welfare of animals used in rodeos and charreadas (Mexican-style rodeos), I respectfully request that you consider the following policy when making your decision:

I encourage the adoption of the Cheyenne , WY Frontier Days rodeo policy:  NO PRODS period. If a horse stalls, the cowboy dismounts, and the horse is moved into the adjoining chute.  If the horse stalls again, s/he is taken out of rotation.

So no prods, and nobody has to make the call whether or not the use of a prod is necessary "to protect horse and rider."

Thank you kindly for your careful consideration of this policy.

Tracy Ely
