Pregnant Mare Rescue Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 1 August 2007

Hello All!!

We would like to first thank everyone for your generous donations! Each one of you makes what we do possible. Thank you from all of us at Pregnant Mare Rescue.

They are finally here!! Our latest rescues from the feedlot have made it! It was a grueling trip to Nevada, much longer than originally expected. Our rig broke down, overheated and had to be towed and repaired. Lynn and Kendra spent extra 24-hours that wasn't planned, had to drive home over every pass in 103 degree weather with the heater on, but who cares? It was all worth it once they saw those sweet desperate faces.

The mare is named Penny, as in "Lucky Penny", and the little orphaned filly is Hope. They are both safe and sound at Pregnant Mare Rescue enjoying the mild summer weather of the Calif. coast. They are beginning to roll and relax. Lynn, our founder, takes them for a walk everyday; Penny is halter trained and Hope follows them around.

Penny has a big gash on her forehead that was left untreated while on the lot. The vet cleaned it up and to keep away the pesky flies she is now in a fly mask most of the time. The vet says she is in foal as we thought, and estimated she was "just" 3 by looking at her teeth. She is a purebred Curly Bashkir and Lynn was told she is bred to a purebred Curly. Curlies are known to be extremely gentle and don't spook like other horses. They are hypoallergenic; people who are normally allergic to horses should look into a Curly. Life is allergen -free around a Curly! Penny will stay at Pregnant Mare Rescue 2-months so that her wound is completely healed before she goes to an adoptive home. She is a very, very sweet mare. We are thrilled she gets to see life. She is a character, very curious and loves the attention. We are so happy for her.

Hope, thought to be around 4-6 months old, is extremely cautious but coming around more each day. On her third day she cut loose bucking and kicking and running across the back acreage at a full gallop. How long had it been since she could do that? PMR was told she is a Warmblood; her mother was a very large buckskin warmblood. She will remain here for her 21-day quarantine and then go on to her adoptive home. We are pleased to find out she will live about 20-minutes from Pregnant Mare Rescue in a beautiful pasture turned out with another little foal. ……Perfect.

These little souls are amazing. They nicker now when they hear a voice and wait expectantly for hay and they are learning what a carrot is! Penny and Hope are happy and content here at Pregnant Mare Rescue!

Thank-you to all that donated to this wonderful cause!!!!
